Strings were changed, blood was shed

Yes, it happens just about every time I change strings–those nasty string ends find their way into my digits without fail. I know there’s a better way….

Anyway, today I took an opportunity to experiment with my string gauges on my long scale Clinesmith lap steel. I’ve been feeling a little underwhelmed with the standard C6 gauges, so I thought it was time to get my action and tone back. I’m using a .017 for string 2 (C), .019 for A, and .022P for G. This is really a first for me (the plain G), at least as far as I can remember, so I want to take her for a spin for a few days before I make a decision. Once I’ve settled on the right gauges, I’m going to approach one of the string companies about doing a special set for long scale steels. I’ll keep you posted.
